All Time Low - Weightless Music Video Analysis

The music video opens with a stereotypical scene of a band member being swarmed by a group of fans this is conforming to the convention that band members get lots of girls, this is reinforced when the camera takes the point of view of the band member, this is achieved by panning around the girls from the P.O.V. Then the video conforms further by adding words such as 'lunatic' , 'stalker' and 'obsessed' , at this point the only sound has been diegetic. When the music starts to play, there is then a challenging of conventions, within the music video when captions which have been added in after editing, give an insight into how the band memebers feel about all the attention they get. Then the music video conforms to generic conventions of music videos for bands as there are close ups of the band members along with panning high angle shots of the audience to create a sense of enjoyment and this could be ENTERTAINMENT for fans who have seen All Time Low at a concert before. There are quick cuts used to keep up with the tempo of the song which allow for the audience to keep the pace of the song. The post production work, used is introducing captions which challenge the common strereo type that bands have big persona's and do not care about fans. The music videos use quick cuts, close ups and post production, allow the producers to both challenge and conform to modern stereotypes of bands.

Arctic Monkeys- A View From The Afternoon music video analysis

The video opens with a close up of a man pushing a trolley then cutting to a long shot until the man walks out of shot, before cutting to establishing shots of housing blocks and flats, this sets the scene for the music video, an over the shoulder shot is then used to show that the man is a drummer before quickly cutting to close up of his face which lasts three seconds. The sound seems to be diegetic before the music comes in. The video focuses on the percussion side of the song epitomised by the constant use of the drum kit which is the focal point of the video, which is shown by the fast paced pan into the main characters face. Using fading the shots flow seemingly into one another as the song progresses, lighting plays a big part of this video, as the action cuts from day to night with images such as foxes which we associate with the night, there is a constant light on the main character which makes good use of chiaroscuro lighting. A non linear shot is then added of our main character submerged in water as if to be submerged in the music and that all other things around him are inadequate. We are then brought back to reality as a slow zoom on the main characters hands reveals he has in fact drummed so much his hands are bleeding, this break in the drumming allows for a semi guitar solo. Then a close up is used with the characters face of centre of screen which is pleasing to the eye, as the tempo increase the quick cuts to different both high and low angles. Establishing shots are used again to reinforce to the audience where they are, and the lighting then falls allowing for shadows a silhouettes to cascade over the scene. The story then picks up when we see another character who we assume is a resident of the flats holding a baseball bat, then special effects are used to make the moon explode as the music reaches its peak.

The opening long shot establishes the scene and fits the sombre mood of the song, as the singer begins to sing, cuts to his face are made as he begins to sings with elongated shots of his face as he breaks the fourth wall with the audience. The lyrics are selectively matched to the shots that are involved for example; “carry you to broken ground” which is accompanied by a shot of our character (and singer) carrying an object. This selective use of lyrics allows the camera shots to build to a crescendo as the song does, the use of fire, allows the audience to be visually engaged along with the lyrics as the song becomes more intense with a higher tempo. The songs cold feel is accompanied by the look of the setting and the character, but as the fire is shown the music becomes more intense thus allowing the song to progress. The close up shots used brings focus to the action. The music video uses an array of simple shots, and angles, which means they are not limited by what they can do to create the music video this allows the song to match incredibly with the music video.
